UPDATE (05/05/23): Darby will be going to her foster-to-adopt home tomorrow, May 6th, 2023.

Long term foster or potential foster-to-adopt home needed ASAP for Darby

Darby was found as a stray in the Fayetteville, NC area. Although she had a microchip, her owner’s never came to claim her. We don’t know a whole lot about Darby at this point. We will fill you all in on the things we do know. Since being at the shelter, she has shown so much love to everyone she has met. She has a lot of good energy for hucklebutts and zoomies. She is estimated to be about 3 years old and weighs 47 pounds. She met a dog of similar size and was very nonchalant during the short meet. She allowed the other dog to sniff her, she sniffed and tail wagged a little part way through the time she was with the other dog, she then just walked away. She pulls when on a leash. She keeps her kennel clean. She will give you endless kisses and snuggles. She often looks like she is smiling. She is heartworm positive and will need treatment. We will cover the costs for that treatment. Next are some things we do not know about Darby. We do not know her background/history. We do not know how she is with cats or smaller creatures in any way. We do not know how she is with young children. We need to get her out of the shelter as soon as possible. We are looking for someone willing to open their home to Darby for the duration of her heartworm treatment as well as several months following treatment so she can then be testing to make sure that she no longer has it. This would also allow plenty of time to truly get to know her and what kind of home would be ideal for her. We are willing to send to her a home with a dog of similar size or bigger. However, along with our typical protocol of doing gradual integration, consideration has to be taken of the heartworm treatment and the fact that she will not be able to be riled up until the treatment is complete. Therefore, if it turned out that she and the resident dog were good together, they would not be allowed to play until the vet gave the go ahead, which usually happens about 30 days after the 3rd treatment. We realize it is a lot to ask someone to take in a bully who needs to undergo treatment for heartworm but this sweet girl is what rescue is about. Someone didn’t give her preventatives and now she is paying the price. Someone chose to just let her go and not claim her and now she needs someone to take her in. In spite of that, she is still a happy bully. She will give you an abundance of love and silliness (and also probably some naughtiness, after all she is a bull terrier!). No cats or smaller animals. Since we do not know how she would be with younger children, we err on the side of caution, and say children 12 and older. If you live within 6 hours of Fayetteville, NC and can provide a place for Darby, please either message our main inbox or Lisa Taubman Blount, (https://www.facebook.com/lisa.taubman/), directly. If you live further than 6 hours away and are willing to drive a good portion to get her, you may also be considered but you have to be available in the very near future to do so.
