Sometimes it take longer than we anticipated to find a home for a bully under our care as we won’t just place a bully in a home because there is one, we feel it has to be the right home. Such is the case with Jerzy. Jerzy’s original owners had purchased her and her littermate, Cali Girl – Adopted, with the intent to breed them. Cali was not bred but Jerzy was. She had 8 puppies but only 4 survived. The owners felt Jerzy wasn’t being a great mom so they beat her. They then were moving out of the country and had sold the 4 surviving puppies already so they planned to just euthanize both girls. Thankfully, a neighbor came along and took the girls in but the landlord found out and the bullies had to go. Blue Ridge was contacted at that point. We got Cali straight into a foster to adopt home. Jerzy was a different situation though, her owners did not provide any medical care for her after she birthed the puppies and it was quite evident that she needed it. We felt that she should go to a foster home so that we could address all of her medical needs and allow her time to build trust with some humans based on how she was treated in her original home. Over the last 8 months Jerzy has blossomed, her true personality came out and she has shown herself to be a lovely yet naughty, silly bull terrier. It took some time and work though from her awesome foster family, Aspen and Sarah Burton, to get her there. We made several posts looking for an adoptive home for Jerzy and were really unsure why we were having difficulty finding a home for her. We wondered if it was because she has floppy ears or if it was related to the fact that she is deaf. The last time we posted her though, it happened to be shortly after one of our adoptive families had lost their beautiful Blue Ridge alumnus girl, Molly May I – Adopted, to a terrible illness. Molly went to her family, Tony and Leah Koch DeBiase in July of 2021. She was deaf, had one blue eye and was a very sweet girl whose favorite things included napping with her human dad, bacon and making her mom sit in the back seat of the car so she could be in the front with Tony. Molly became ill and had been in and out of the hospital over a few months of summer and fall of 2022 and had left doctors perplexed. The doctor’s eventually tested for Valley Fever, a fungal infection, that is found in soil in areas like the southwestern US. Since Molly was in the northeast, they hadn’t originally thought of it but then learned that Molly had originally come from Texas when a shelter in the northeast pulled her and then contacted Blue Ridge about placing her. By the time Molly got her diagnosis, she already had some pretty serious issues/damage in multiple organs. She was given one treatment but her little body couldn’t take it any more and she sadly passed away on November 19th, 2022. We were all broken hearted but none more than Tony and Leah. When Leah saw the post on Jerzy (who unbeknownst to her at the time, was born on November 19th, 2020), she reached out asking a few questions, which then led to a few more questions, which then led to Tony and Leah going to meet Jerzy in December, which led to them deciding that they wanted to bring Jerzy home. The fact that Jerzy is deaf was something that pulled them in as they saw how wonderful a bully Molly was and part of that was related to her deafness. Tony and Leah had vacation plans though for the beginning of January so Sarah graciously agreed to keep her until this past Saturday. On Saturday morning, Tony and Leah drove to Sarah’s and got Jerzy and brought her home. She has been settling in nicely, is loving her giant fenced in backyard and having someone home with her almost all of the time. She is enjoying nap time and has learned that the kitchen is the place to be. We were so sad when Molly passed away and truly feel that Molly had a paw in making this all happen. We can not thank Sarah and Aspen enough for the love and care they gave Jerzy and for their patience with how us for how long it took to get her into the right home.
