Sahara, formerly known as Peaches, came into rescue back in November when she had been picked up as a stray, adopted out by the shelter and then picked up as a stray again the following week. We didn’t know much about her but she seemed sweet. She started out at one foster home but the foster’s schedule wasn’t working out good with Sahara and getting her on a good potty routine was tough. We moved her quickly to a very experienced foster, who also has one of our fospice bull terriers, Penny. Over the next several months, we learned a lot about Sahara. She is a small bundle of sweetness and love. The day that we pulled her from the shelter and sent her to her first foster home, we made a post on our main Facebook page about her. We read all the comments but one particular comment stood out and stuck in our heads ever since. It was written by Zak, dad to the late Blue Ridge alumnus The Good, the Bad and the Rugby (who was being called Rigby). Rigby had gone to Zak and his partner Emily as a senior boy. Unfortunately, even though he had been fostered for a bit before going to Zak and Emily, there was a lot of things about Rigby that we weren’t aware of until he was with them. He had extensive medical issues as well as senior related cognitive issues. Zak and Emily went so far above and beyond for Rigby, in spite of him not really being able to connect too much with them. His dementia and other medical issues reached the point of him not having any real quality of life so he crossed the rainbow bridge. During Rigby’s time with Zak and Emily and after he passed, we expressed our deepest gratitude for the compassion and love they showed Rigby and vowed to them that down the road, when they were ready for another bully, we would do everything we could to find their dream dog, a small, very affectionate, dog friendly, silly female bull terrier. Fast forward to Sahara’s post that day, Zak commented that Sahara was their dream dog. With that little tidbit of information tucked in our minds, we watched as Sahara decompressed and began to shine in her foster home. We realized that she truly had all the characteristics of the bully Zak and Emily were looking for. We ran into a slight problem because they had a lot of travel plans up through March. Sahara’s foster mom graciously agreed to keep her until they completed all their travel. Yesterday, it all came to fruition. Zak and Emily drove up the night before, stayed overnight at a hotel and then went to pick up their girl. They even got a bonus by getting to meet Penny, Sahara’s foster mom’s Blue Ridge fospice gal. It was emotional for all of us because of all we know they went through with Rigby. Sahara has been giving lots of love to Zak and Emily and has been settling in nicely. Sahara will now and forever live the life of little princess
