Sylvester, a mostly or completely blind (we aren’t really sure) 8 year old bull terrier, was picked up as a stray and his owner never tried to claim him. He looks like he has had a rough life, yet in spite of that, the shelter reported him to be very sweet and upon our own evaluation of him, this was fully corroborated. It seems that what Sylvester wants most is to be petted and loved on by humans. When we started to look for the right home for him, we had several kind hearted people reach out about possibly bringing him home. It took a little time to sort through the inquiries and applications and interview people in order for us to make a decision on which home would be best for Sylvester. Once we made our choice though, we made it with 100% certainty that Sylvester would be so loved and taken care of the way he deserves by a woman named Jennie. Jennie is one of the most persistent individuals to have reached out to us in a long time. Jennie had applied several months back and her application was slightly lost in the shuffle of others and pushed aside some because of emergency cases that would come up that needed to be dealt with. Jennie, however, continued to reach out in a very respectful way over the months, reminding us that she was interested in getting a bull terrier. Since she didn’t have previous experience with the breed, she knew that taking in a middle aged or senior bully would be the best way to be introduced to the breed. As soon as we posted Sylvester, she reached out, offering to bring him home. As we spoke, it became more evident that she was meant to be Sylvester’s human. Due to the timing of things related to the July 4th holiday weekend, we were not able to get him transported as quick as we wanted. Our dear friend and pilot Tony had offered to go pick Sylvester up on Sunday, the 10th and fly him to an airport close to Jennie’s house. We were thrilled with this plan, however, when we spoke to the shelter yesterday about it, even though they said that was fine, they also said that they were going to make Sylvester available for adoption directly through them in the meantime. If he was still available on the weekend, they would let us know and then he could go through Blue Ridge. This was very unexpected and threw us off quite a bit. We had concerns that he would end up in the wrong hands but also knew how devastating it would be to Jennie if he ended up not going to her. Without skipping a beat, Jennie, who lives about 8 hours away from the shelter and was already at work at this time for the day, offered to drive all the way to the shelter to get Sylvester today. We contacted the shelter numerous times to tell them the plan, looking for reassurance that he would not be adopted out before she got there. Finally after a few hours, we heard back and they agreed to hold him for Blue Ridge and Jennie. Jennie finished out her workday, ran home to pack a bag and drove 6 1/2 hours of the 8 hour trek last night. This morning she drove the remaining 1 1/2 hours to the shelter to get her boy and bring him home. Sylvester and Jennie will have plenty of bonding time on the 8 hour drive back home. We can not say enough about the dedication and commitment that Jennie has already put forth in her desire to make sure that Sylvester has the home he deserves. We are thrilled for Sylvester and his future now that he has such an incredible mom.

Special thanks to the Brandywine Valley SPCA for taking care of Sylvester while under their care, Ryan Pedrick for going to meet and evaluate Sylvester, Tony Nettleman for his willingness to fly to get Sylvester and Jennie for dropping everything and driving 8 hours each way to make sure Sylvester went to the home that was meant for him.
