We have known about little Amelia Grace for a little over a month. She was dumped in North Carolina in February, the day before a bully named Dawson that we took under the rescue was dumped in the same county but different area. Her finder worked with a local rescue and got her up to date on vaccines and got her spayed. She got her into a home but unfortunately it wasn’t a good fit so now we are going to work on finding her a home. Amelia is thought to be about 6 years old and weighs 32 lbs. She most likely lived a life in a kennel area outside with very little to no real world experience or interactions but was probably in the presence of other animals. Many things are scary to her, like venturing away from home for walks and car rides. She finds comfort with other dogs who she can play with and be with and has been around several cats without issue. She takes a little time to come out of her shell with human adults but once she does, she loves to cuddle and snuggle on the couch. She seems to connect faster with younger humans and would do great in a home with kids 9 and older. In the finder’s home, she was doing pretty good with potty training as there is a doggie door leading to a fenced in area and she could go out whenever she needed without having to ask or let someone know she had to go. However, when she went to the other home, there wasn’t a doggie door and she had some accidents in the house so she will need some work with potty training so she learns to alert her humans when she needs to go out. She would probably do better having a fenced in yard where she felt safe and secure outside until she builds up some confidence for walks. She does need to know she has a safe spot to hide in when things get scary for her so having a crate with blankets that she can bury herself in for her with the door open is the best. She does great in her crate when no one is home or at night but she does have some good energy that needs to be worked off. She has been good with both male and female dogs and would do best going to home with other similar sized or bigger dogs who she can play rough bull terrier style with, learn from on how to be a loved pet member of the family and provide her reassurance that only other animals can do in a situation like hers.

Unfortunately Amelia Grace’s type of case is not a first for us and sadly won’t be a last. We have worked on many Bull Terriers and Mini Bull Terriers who seem to have come from similar situations. With the right home, where the family has patience and understanding, we have seen them thrive. Yes, it can take a lot of work and time but it is such a beautiful thing to witness when they suddenly walk down the street with interest instead of fear or when they start to tail wag at a new experience that had made them nervous previously.

If you can provide the home that Amelia Grace deserves and live as close to New Bern, NC as possible due to Amelia being scared in the car (although realistically we would try to make it work if you lived within about 4 -5 hours of there), please message our main inbox or Lisa Taubman Blount directly. Thank you.
